Issue 2 roundup

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Seven Days at Minimum Wage is a series of YouTube videos featuring working people whose pay would be raised by the passage of Ohio’s Issue 2 and similar state ballot measures to “Raise The Wage”.
Today is Day 6, featuring Amanda from Cleveland.
I especially recommend checking out Jeffrey Edwards (day 3).
Here are a couple other interesting [...]

Two blog posts about The Casino Amendment that you really need to read before you vote November 7…
Jill deconstructs the language of the proposed amendment re: who’ll qualify for tuition help.
And courtesy of BFD, Ed Morrison’s presentation on the likely social and economic impact on low-income neighborhoods near downtown.

If it’s Wednesday, this must be Bentonville

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

havecoffeewillwrite posts a collection of links from Writing on the Wal every Wednesday. (It’s a thankless job, but somebody’s gotta do it.) Jeff had a particularly fine catch yesterday.
I think this is my favorite.

A culture of lawlessness…

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

… at Cleveland City Hall.
Baker admits he knew his obligations under the law but chose not to carry them out until there was a political reason to do so.
He “kept the mayor abreast of his decision”. Campbell tells the PD: “At all times director Baker acted with integrity and on behalf of the best interests [...]

Congresswoman Meets Bloggers

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Meet The Bloggers interview with Stephanie Tubbs-Jones last Wednesday. I’ve been missing a lot of MTB sessions recently, but not this one. Lots of Cleveland political history, plus Issue 3, what’s on the agenda if the Dems become the House majority, etc.

Our “reformed” School Board: We don’t need no stinking committees

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

If you were amazed and confounded, as I was, by this little story tucked away on page B-2 of this morning’s PD, you should take a look at Piet Van Lier’s three articles in the June issue of CATALYST: For Cleveland Schools. Here are the links:
Facing orders from City Hall, Board struggles to [...]

How Brown could lose

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Something struck me Thursday evening as I walked the dog near my house in the heavily Democratic Brooklyn Centre neighborhood of Cleveland. In three-block stretches of Archwood and Mapledale Avenues I saw only three Strickland-Fisher yard signs, and only two for Sherrod Brown. You’d have to be paying very close attention to notice that an [...]

Giant Eagle races to the bottom

Monday, October 16th, 2006

It’s not widely known that the Fund for Our Economic Future’s “regional economic dashboard” study identifies “income equality” as one of eight key growth factors for successful regional economies.
If that’s true, then here’s one more reason why the FFOEF, and everyone else who claims to care about northeast Ohio’s economic future, should be calling for [...]

Dave’s steps up again

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

The headline says “Giant Eagle’s lead grows”. But in the city of Cleveland, the purchases and swaps of Tops stores described in this morning’s PD will make Dave’s Supermarkets, not Giant Eagle, the dominant full-service grocery chain.
Maybe now they’ll get some respect.
At this moment the three major grocers have seventeen stores within the city limits [...]

Does Blackwell’s tax plan really exist? Not yet…

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

So, it’s now been a full week since Ken Blackwell put out his press release entitled “Blackwell Reform Cuts Taxes for Millions of Ohioans”. But strangely, except for the seven-paragraph release itself, there’s still no sign that any such “reform” plan actually exists.
There’s still no link to a position paper in the online release. [...]
