Cleveland dim bulbs?

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Tales From The Rust Belt points to 18Seconds.org, a Yahoo site that ranks the “enlightenment” of 358 U.S. metro areas by their purchases of compact fluorescent light bulbs. TFRB is bragging about the Mahoning Valley’s respectable 178th-place showing.
But what about the Cleveland-Lorain-Mentor SMSA? We’re way down the list at number 327… one of [...]

Monday, February 26th, 2007

The gap between natural gas rates charged by Dominion East Ohio and rates charged by the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council will narrow next month, but our municipal aggregator’s bills will still be 12.4% higher.
Today’s month-end settlement price on the New York Mercantile Exchange, for gas to be delivered in March, was $7.547 per thousand [...]

Beacon-Journal: Ohio retail “a zero-sum game”

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Today’s Akron Beacon-Journal business section has a long article by Kerry Clawson on job and wage shrinkage in Ohio’s retail sector. It should be mandatory reading for Cleveland city officials and other Steelyard Commons enthusiasts — though of course it’s too late to do us any good.
A couple of key excerpts:
“I think in Ohio for [...]

Just curious

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

An email sent this morning to Charles Burke, chairman of the Baldwin-Wallace political science department:
Dr. Burke,
I’m a fellow resident of the Tenth Congressional District and the writer of a local weblog called Callahan’s Cleveland Diary…
I’m curious about your comment to the Plain Dealer, quoted in this morning’s story about the Kucinich presidential campaign:
Burke, whose [...]

The Markos vs. the Menace

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

I’m not a Kos reader, so I didn’t know The Markos had posted this trash job on my Congressman till I read about it at MaxSpeak. It’s eleven hours old and there are already a thousand twelve hundred comments, so, you know, why bother? — whatever I’m gonna say is already in there somewhere.
But I [...]

Governor appoints Centolella to PUCO slot

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Governor Strickland announces the appointment of Paul Centolella to the PUCO.
Paul, a lawyer and economist, was a lead litigator and policy director for the Office of Consumers Counsel in the ’80s and early ’90s (the Spratley era). Since then he’s worked as a consulting economist for  Science Applications International.
Among the four candidates sent to Strickland [...]

“Riding in minivans with Dennis Kucinich”…

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

…on politicstv.com.

Part of Connecticut Bob’s wall-to-wall coverage of Dennis’s campaign visit to, um, Connecticut.
This is actually a pretty good overview of Kucinich’s take on Iraq, the Democrats’ new responsibilities as majority legislators, and U.S. foreign policy as a whole. Plus there’s a near-death experience.

Heckuva job, Alan!

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Strickland spokesman says the Governor doesn’t intend to replace Alan Schriber as PUCO Chairman.
And:
Consumer groups say that under Schriber, the PUCO has sided too often with the utilities, especially on phone and electric cases. Schriber denies it, pointing to the stability of rates during his eight years as chairman.
Strickland, who gets four appointments to the [...]

Wal-Mart property taxes — Jackson recovers a fumble

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Mayor Jackson announced today that Wal-Mart has agreed to forgo its ten-year state tax abatement and pay real estate tax on its Steelyard Commons superstore.
Congratulations to the Mayor for recovering that fumble. Let’s hope he also gets his hands on the two other balls still loose on the field — the abatements for SYC’s Target [...]
