AT&T spokesman says no fiber TV in Cleveland for two and a half years

Well, okay, he was just a door-to-door canvass supervisor. But he was pretty firm about it.

The AT&T sales crew was knocking doors on Archwood Saturday, for the second time in three months. Just making sure our service is up-to-date, you see. So I asked the kid who came to our door if the TV service he’s peddling is wireline or satellite. He said satellite, of course. But then his supervisor (trainer?) out on the sidewalk chimed in helpfully: “They won’t have fiber in Cleveland for two and a half years.”

Really, I said, is that what they told you? Yes, that’s what they told him.

So there you have it, all you Cleveland Senators and Representatives who voted to give up community cable franchising in order to get “cable competition”. Your cable competition has arrived.

For the next two and a half years, it’s the Dish Network.

Well, it’s not like cities negotiate better deals. Euclid “negotiated” a local deal with AT&T U-verse over the summer. The “deal” was only for the eastern half of Euclid (where 6 of the 9 city council live) because to include the west side of Euclid would mean AT&T would have to invest in upgrading infrastructure before the planned 2009 timeframe when they would have done it anyway.

They did get AT&T to agree to market U-verse once that happens…

    WHAT A DEAL!!!!
