August foreclosures well below 2007 level, but year-to-date totals are still close

928 new civil foreclosures were filed in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court in August, according to NEOCANDO.  This is a the lowest monthly total since the beginning of 2007 and a significant dropoff from last August, when new filings spiked above 1,400.

But the county’s total new foreclosures for the first eight months of 2008 still stand at 9,127,  just 2% fewer than were filed in the first eight months of 2007 — the county’s all-time record foreclosure year.

Is the August number a sign of good somewhat less awful news to come, or just a temporary hesitation — like the last time the county’s foreclosures fell below 1,000 a month in April and May 2007?  Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, though, we’re still on track to more than 14,000 foreclosure filings for the year — which will make 2008, if not the worst, then the second worst year ever.

Maybe the only thing we can hope, Bill, is that August will start a dowward trend? Though I have no reason to think that it would be nice. Thank you for doing this.
